Introduction

Les Murray is acknowledged internationally as one of the most gifted Australian poets writing today.  But he has also proved a controversial figure, whose poetry strays across the boundaries of political and cultural debate.  You will find that the dedication Murray makes in all of his books is 'to the glory of God'.

 The Meaning of Existence

Everything except language
knows the meaning of existence.
Trees, planets, rivers, time
know nothing else. They express it
moment by moment as the universe.

Even this fool of a body
lives it in part, and would
have full dignity within it
but for the ignorant freedom
of my talking mind.
