Indigenous businesses in Australia: A supply chain management perspective - CSOA+

The article presents the current position of supply chain management (SCM) of indigenous
businesses in Australia and the approaches to connect it to the broader business. A comprehensive
literature review was carried out on SCM of indigenous business practices across four
organisations identified in the Whanu Binal Entrepreneur Programme. A deductive approach was
used in analysing the literature to express the business operations of four organisations in SCM
concepts and theoretical perspectives. Indigenous businesses are managing their SCs without
formally addressing the tools, techniques and systems, and are of small scale often less than
AUD 5.0million. The mainstream businesses with less than 5million sales were found to have SC
collaboration, and tools and systems used in the SCs. Indigenous businesses are strongly guided
by its culture, supported by the Yarning in transferring knowledge across different generations of
women supported by the Indigenous Standpoint Theory (IST).

Service providers are essential in our economy. Where would we be without hospitals, cleaning companies, accounting firms and hairdressers? But it can be difficult to apply concepts of operations management to these businesses.

Focusing on the operational processes, this programme takes you behind the scenes, learning about the four strategic areas of operations; facilities, materials, quality and technology, applying them to a service provider and showing how various strategies can be used to improve business performance. A great insight into the unique aspects of services marketing.

Business owners are fast realising that reducing their environmental footprint is not just a PR exercise, it's vital to their future.

This programme features a case study of businesses that have developed unique approaches to sustainability. Their visionary leaders reveal how becoming 'green' has helped make their businesses stronger and more financially viable. Through interviews we discover the problems they faced, the benefits of change and their organisation's future directions.
