Australian Aboriginal Artefacts and Archaeology
Australia's human history began over 60,000 years ago. The continent was discovered by a group of voyagers who travelled across a vast passage of water to a land where hominid had roamed before. Over millennia they explored and colonised every region, transforming the terrain as they moved, making the country their own through language, song and story. ... Perhaps a billion people have lived in Australia.
Griffiths, B 2020, Deep Time Dreaming, Black Inc., Carlton, Vic., p. 1.
Aboriginal Australians generally hold the view that historically they have always been on Country, deeply entwined spiritually and physically with the land, and in terms of human history, being the oldest and longest continuing civilization in the world effectively makes this view correct. Always was, always will be.
Throughout this history, First Australians left their mark in many different ways. Agricultural structures such as the aquaculture basins for fish farming at Lake Condah and on the Darling. In some places, including in Tasmania, worn flaked stone tools are commonly found in places such as lake and riverbeds. They have literally left their mark on the land at some sites, through rock art and paintings (see next section) and even records of human movement such as the Pleistocene human tracks at Willandra Lakes.
When talking about archaeology and historic artefacts and sites in Aboriginal Australian history, it is imperative that if we find ourselves in the situation of being at a historical site, we do not touch, move or take any archaeological items:
It should be remembered that this heritage is finite, fragile and irreplaceable. A site may be thousands of years old and our generation needs to ensure we do our bit to pass it on to future generations. If you find a site, please enjoy it and the surrounding Country but leave everything in its place and in a similar condition. If you notice recent damage or impacts you should contact the local authority.
