Writing Pitches for Publication

In freelance writing, pitching refers to the act of sending any kind of proposal to any entity. To get something published, you might pitch an article idea (query) to an editor at the New York Times, or you might pitch your services to Cardinal Health. You might pitch your book manuscript to an agent or publisher.

Pitching simply means the act of sending something to someone else for consideration to be published. That's it in a nutshell. As a ... writer, you will primarily use pitch in two ways, as a noun to refer to a query or [a work], and as a verb to refer to the act of having sent the pitch.

Writing the Pitch

Pitches should be short and concise. They have to very quickly grab the attention of the editor while still effectively conveying your message. Here are some guides to help you write your pitch.

Choosing a Publisher

It's important that you chose a publisher or publication that is a good fit for both you and the writing that you produce. Think about what type, genre or style of writing you produce. Who are the intended audiences?

Submission Guideline

Most serial publications and publishers have a set of submission guidelines. Editors may disregard your pitch completely if you do not comply with their submission guidelines. Read more about submission guidelines below.

Different serial publications look for different things. Literary journals look for high end creative fiction, drama or poetry. Travel magazines look for engaging writing from interesting locations with eye-catching photography. News and current event serials look for important and well-researched stories with impact.

Below are a number of publications you could pitch to based on genre and style. The list is partly taken from this article from Writer's Victoria, and there are likely many more magazines not included in this list. Many of these publications could fall into a number of different categories.
